036: Should I install an antivirus? How?


Installing and regularly updating a commercial antivirus program on your own computers is the first line of defense against computer viruses. See more about how to defend your Windows computer from viruses, here:

Antivirus software (free or paid) is available for other operating systems and we encourage its use. However, it is critical that Windows users install, use, and regularly update antivirus software because most viruses are designed to attack Windows.

Though email entering and leaving campus through the Mines network is automatically scanned for viruses, which are deleted when found, that doesn’t mean personal antivirus software is optional. There are many more ways than email, especially removable media like flash and external hard drives, by which to transmit viruses.
